Why Ramen in Hiroshima is So Special

As a local who has lived in Hiroshima for many years, I can say from the heart that this city is full of flavor—not only culturally, but also in its food scene. Hiroshima’s ramen has a unique personality: usually based on a shoyu-tonkotsu (soy sauce and pork bone) broth, it’s both light and rich at the same time.

Unlike the heavier styles found in Fukuoka or Tokyo, Hiroshima ramen is incredibly well-balanced. Every bowl feels crafted with care, and many ramen shops here have deep roots in the local community. I genuinely love living in Hiroshima, and I want to share the city's culinary soul with the world—starting with the best ramen in Hiroshima.

1. Chuuka Soba Youki (陽気 江波本店)

This shop is an institution. Established in 1958, Youki represents the soul of Hiroshima-style ramen. The shoyu-tonkotsu broth is smooth, slightly sweet, and packed with umami. The noodles are thin and perfectly match the soup. Locals line up nightly—this is the real deal.

  • Address: 3-4-1 Eba-minami, Naka-ku, Hiroshima

  • Hours: 11:30–13:30 / 18:00–24:00 (Closed on the 1st, 12th, 13th, and 26th of each month)

2. Shio Soba Maeda (塩そば まえだ)

If you’re craving something lighter, this salt-based ramen is a standout. The soup is made from Setouchi dried sardines, kombu, and katsuobushi (dried bonito). It's elegant, clear, and incredibly flavorful. The handmade noodles are delicate, yet hold their bite.

  • Address: 5-13 Funairihon-machi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima

  • Hours: 11:00–15:30 (Closed on Sundays)

3. Onomichi Ramen Itcho (尾道ラーメン 一丁)

Onomichi ramen is famous for its soy sauce broth with floating chunks of pork back fat. This version is beautifully executed with flat noodles and a nostalgic flavor that warms the heart. Though technically from nearby Onomichi, this style is beloved by many Hiroshima residents too.

  • Address: 6-3 Nobuhiro-cho, Fukuyama

  • Hours: 11:00–20:00 (Irregular holidays)

4. KUNIMATSU (中華そば くにまつ 本店)

This is the best ramen in Hiroshima if you're looking for something spicy and different. Kunimatsu is known for its soupless dandan noodles (shiru-nashi tantanmen), a Hiroshima specialty. The rich sesame sauce, chili oil, and numbing Sichuan pepper create an unforgettable experience.

  • Address: 8-10 Hatchobori, Naka-ku, Hiroshima

  • Hours: 11:00–15:00 / 17:00–21:00 (Closed on Sundays)

A master of “maze-soba” (soupless mixed noodles), Ippeiya offers unique flavor options like black pepper, curry, and even soy milk. The bowls are fully customizable and served with lots of toppings. They also have an English menu, making it a great choice for international visitors.

  • Address: 10-14 Kyobashi-cho, Minami-ku, Hiroshima
